I found it and have just read your journal so far and seems like you are really enjoying yourself. I love the entertaining story about the haircut. Keep writing

And the management club, in a new place, can be a lonely club, where you try to determine your place and your boundaries in unfamiliar territory. Lonely isn't bad, it's just hard to maneuveur through, especially when the culture dictates some of what is expected.

Ed, your weblog is wonderful, I'm learning a lot about China, and you. It's one think to know you as a friend and another as a Professor.

One thing you have stresed is the pride the Chinese take in their work, something we have sort of lost. If there is a holiday they make up for the work days they missed. Not a nine to five and then I can get back to TV and SUV's. Consistnacy is the word I keep thinking of. And the good will that seems to go with it.

Your round houses reminde me of the Alti Plano in Bolivia and Peru and the hogans on the Navajo reservation, where people remain isolated and unsophisticated, mostly by choice. Makes me wonder if evolution or change or growth ever gives the relief of contentment.

Glad that Judy got there and hope she gets to go back.

Love from Navajo Land....Eloisa

Unfortunately, my Chinese is not quite good enough to carry on many conversations. I could have told him thank you; yes; no; where is the bus; so, so; good; great and no good many times, but that wouldn't have been half as interesting a conversation as the one mediated by his son and his son's girlfriend.

As to caring for his 8,000 people, I think at this point it's a matter of setting the tone.

Ed, you are teaching us too! What a guy!
I am really enjoying your website and your
observations, and I envy you this time.

How is your Chinese coming? Did you communicate with the factory owner in his language or yours or both? How does he care for 8,000 people personally? However it is, it works!!

Hey there ED,

I agree, it takes talent to make a trip to the barbershop entertaining, and it is enteratining. Be sure an let us know when they do the 'head and
neck massage.

It sounds like you are all neat and clean now, lightly starched shirts and Kleenexed ears, so how are you coming with the language? And are you going to learn to read and write?

When does Judy come to visit?

Still remember the funnel thing, eh?

The "Funnel Theory" is not a part we've covered yet. In the strategy course I'm doing here, we look at mission, vision (what you would want things to be like if your dreams came true), internal and external factors that can affect success and myriad terms for different things you can do to try to reach your goals - business and personal. I plan to sneak in the funnel stuff a little later, time permitting, and we'll see if their rudimentary English language capability can handle it!

I am so glad you pinged today and had chance to chat and get caught up with you. This sounds like a great adventure. Please keep the commentaries coming. I will be looking forward to reading them. I wonder if any of your pupils will be clever enough to come up with something to top the "funnel song" :)
BTW, is the Funnel Theory on your curriculum?

I don't know of many people who can make the story of a trip to the barber so entertaining. I have no doubt your gesturing was more about the response you got than the concern you had for your beard or hair. You know, you do have a tendency to instigate to make things interesting. Thanks for sharing - look forward to the next post.

Hi Uncle Ed,

Donna sent a message a few weeks ago letting many of us know you were in China and online so I thought I would take a look. Sounds like things are going well for you. What an interesting experience. I love the commentary and will be sure have my Jerry check out the blog. Tell Judy I said hello..
